American League West leader Texas continues its nine game road swing tonight with a stop in Boston. The Rangers and Red Sox begin a two game set this evening with a 7:10pm ET contest at Fenway Park; the game will be broadcast live on the MLB Network. MLB Point Spreads have Boston listed as a -117 moneyline favorite and the game total set at 8.5 runs.
While the Angels got all the headlines coming into the season, the Rangers have wasted little time proving they are still the best team in the AL West. Texas owns an American League best 8-2 record and it enters tonight’s game riding a four game win streak after sweeping the Twins over the weekend in Minnesota.
Somewhat surprisingly, the Rangers strong point, at least through 10 games, has been their pitching. Texas sits 12th in the league with 45 runs scored while its team ERA is third best in the majors at 2.42.
Veteran right-hander Colby Lewis takes the ball tonight with the hopes of keeping that number intact. Lewis is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts; the California native has allowed 12 hits and two earned runs while striking out 15 in 12 2/3 innings of work. Lewis is 2-3 with a 5.01 ERA in 19 appearances (seven starts) against Boston.
The Red Sox got off to a miserable 1-5 start, but they opened their home schedule by taking three out of four against the Rays. Boston did lose Sunday’s series finale 0-1 to fall to 4-6 on the season, but it tallied 31 runs off of Tampa Bay pitching in the first three games of the extended set.
Lefty hurler Jon Lester will shoot for his first win of the season when he takes the hill for Boston tonight. Despite the Red Sox dropping his first two starts, Lester has pitched well, giving up just nine hits and four earned runs in 15 innings on the mound. The six year veteran has also shown well against the Rangers in his career, posting a 3-1 record to go along with a 3.48 ERA in eight outings against Texas.
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Rangers are 3-7 in Colby Lewis’ last 10 starts as a road dog with a total between 8.5 and 9 runs (Under was 8-2 in those 10 games).
