The Mets arrived in St. Louis fresh off a 2-4 Sunday loss against the Milwaukee Brewers. The defeat dropped New York to 6-6, but they maintained their second place standing in the NL East. They are 4.5 games back of the Marlins after the Fish fell 8-0 to the Pirates last night in Pittsburgh.

New York will send left hander Oliver Perez to the mound tonight. The Culiacan, Mexico native is 1-1 on the year with a 7.84 ERA. Perez has worked 10.1 innings thus far, giving up eight hits and nine earned runs. The Mets won his last start 7-2 over the San Diego Padres.

Perez is 1-2 versus the Cardinals in four starts over the last three seasons. St. Louis has racked 27 hits, 12 earned runs, and a .276 batting average against the 27 year old in 25 innings.

St. Louis is currently in second place in the NL Central with an 8-5 record. The Cardinals last played on Saturday, losing 5-7 in Chicago and relenting first place to the Cubs. Tony LaRussa's club managed just five hits in the defeat, two of those coming off the bat of Ryan Ludwick.

Kyle Lohse turned in a lackluster start, getting touched up for five hits and four earned runs in five innings.

Starting tonight for the Cards is 30 year old right hander, Todd Wellemeyer. Wellemeyer is 1-1 this year with a 4.50 ERA; he has given up six earned runs in 12 innings of work. The Louisville, Kentucky native was a surprise last season as he compiled a 13-9 record in 32 starts with a 3.71 ERA.

Wellemeyer was 0-1 against the Mets in 2008. He pitched five innings and gave up 12 hits and six earned runs in the loss.

New York won the season series 3-4 between these two squads last year. They split a four game set at Busch.
