St. Louis, since losing the series in Chicago, has won three straight games. They are now 11-5 and in first place in the NL Central by one and a half games. The Cardinals completed a sweep of the Mets last night, winning 12-8 at Busch Stadium.

Albert Pujols and Rick Ankiel unloaded on New York starter Livan Hernandez yesterday, combining for six hits, six runs, five RBI, and three home runs against the veteran. Starter Kyle Lohse turned in a solid effort, working five innings, giving up eight hits and one earned run.

Chicago is 8-6 and in fourth place in the division after losing two out of three to the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs lost 7-1 to Cincy yesterday at Wrigley, giving them a total of just three runs in the three game series. However, despite their recent slip, Lou Pinella's squad is 4-2 on the road this year and 5-4 in their last nine games in St. Louis.

Starting tonight for the Red Birds is 27 year old Georgia native, Adam Wainwright. Wainwright is 2-0 this year with a 3.31 ERA in three starts. The former reliever won his last start 7-4 against the Cubs in Chicago. He lasted six innings in the outing and gave up six hits and four earned runs.

Starting opposite Wainwright will be Canadian hurler Ryan Dempster. Dempster is 1-0 in his three 2009 starts with an unspectacular 5.00 ERA. The 31 year old made his last start on the 18th, which just so happened to be against St. Louis. The 6'2" pitcher allowed four earned runs on four hits in six innings of work, but the Cubs came away with a 7-5 victory.
