The season’s mid-way point has almost arrived and the American League MVP chase is a tight one; however, the latest 2014 AL MVP Odds from Bovada.lv see a clear front runner in the race. The Angels Mike Trout is drawing +160 MLB odds ($100 wins $160) to win the award while the offshore bookmaker’s second pick, the reigning two-time AL MVP winner Miguel Cabrera, is lined a +350 odds. Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson rounds out the top-three AL MVP favorites with a +500 listing.

Mike Trout is truly a jack of all trades, excelling both at the plate and in the field with a skill set that is, perhaps, unmatched in all of baseball. His offensive numbers are eye popping as he exited Monday’s meeting with the Blue Jays — which just so happened to be the Angels fifth straight win — sporting a .304/.399/.596 slash line (batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage for those not in the know). He also had 20 home runs, 64 RBI, 23 doubles and 10 stolen bases following L.A.’s 5-2 victory over Toronto. And his 5.1 WAR rating (Wins Above Replacement) was tops in the American League and second only to NL MVP front runner Troy Tulowitzki’s 5.4 rating as of July 7th.

As for Cabrera, he was hitting .308 with 14 home runs and 68 RBI while his on-base and slugging percentages stood at .367 and .535, respectively, following the Tigers Sunday night home loss to the Rays. Those are incredible numbers, but Cabrera may need to do more in order to retain the trophy he has won each of the past two seasons.

In spite of Trout’s exploits and Cabrera’s ever reliable bat, the Orioles Nelson Cruz, who is getting +700 MVP odds, should not be dismissed from the AL MVP discussion. Just one season after serving a 50-game suspension for PED use, Cruz has produced a .294/.359/.591 slash line while crushing 28 home runs and driving in 75 (both of those totals led the majors as of July 7th).
