Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox ALCS Game 4 Pick: The Boston Red Sox are hoping a little knuckleball will be the right prescription to the teams besting the Tampa Bay Rays in Tuesday’s American League Championship Series Game-4 at Fenway Park in Boston. The Red Sox would have a difficult time winning the series by going down 3-1 so plenty of pressure will be on knuckler Tim Wakefield in this game. Wakefield has a 4.13 ERA to go along with a 10-11 record this season. Right hander Andy Sonnanstine will pitch for the Rays. Sonnanstine has a 14-9 record and a 4.34 ERA this season.
Oddsmakers at online sportsbook Bodog (Bodoglife.com) currently have the Red Sox listed as 137-money line favorites versus the Rays, while the game's total is sitting at 9. The Rays are getting +127 money line odds. The veteran knuckleballer didn't pitch in the Division Series, as the Red Sox went with a three-man rotation. Now he enters the mix against a team he has dominated throughout his career, going 19-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 41 appearances. However, Wakefield wasn't as strong against Tampa Bay this season, going 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA in three starts. Wakefield pitched well at Fenway in 2008, going 7-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 14 starts. In League Championship Series play, Wakefield is 5-2 with a 4.50 ERA in nine appearances, five of them starts. In Game 4's ALDS series-clinching win over the White Sox, Sonnanstine held Chicago to two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. The fourth member of the rotation, Sonnanstine doesn't light up the radar guns but is a consistent strike-thrower who plays to his strengths. A crafty pitcher, Sonnanstine is at his best when he pitches off his fastball and uses his command to his advantage. Although he received a pair of no-decisions earlier this year, Sonnanstine has pitched particularly well at Fenway, and is a career 1-1 against Boston with a 5.40 ERA. B.J. Upton went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer as the Rays walked past the Red Sox 9-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the ALCS on Monday. Tampa Bay cashed as +170 road underdogs as the game played over the 8.5-run total listed by oddsmakers. Rocco Baldelli also had a three-run jack for the Rays, while winning pitcher Matt Garza allowed one run over six innings for Tampa Bay. Jacoby Ellsbury drove in the lone run for Boston, as Jon Lester gave up four earned runs over 5 2-3 innings to take the loss for the Red Sox.
