If the odds makers at Bovada.lv are correct, the Warriors reaching a record breaking 73rd win is a foregone conclusion. Golden State wraps up its season tonight at home against the Memphis Grizzlies and the latest line has Stephen Curry and company listed as a -19 NBA picks favorite.
Golden State’s run at history appeared in jeopardy after its shocking home loss to the Timberwolves on April 5; however, the Warriors responded to that setback with three straight wins to tie the 1995-96 Bulls regular season record of 72 wins.
While the Warriors clearly the NBA’s best team, reaching that 72nd win and putting themselves in position to claim their 73rd tonight was anything but a certainty.
Golden State needed two wins over San Antonio, including one at the AT& T Center where the Spurs had not lost a game all season. Curry and his cohorts got that all-important victory on Sunday, defeating San Antonio 92-86.
In addition to their two wins over the Spurs, the Warriors also logged a win over the Grizzlies in Memphis. The final outcome was closer than expected, though, with Golden State scoring a narrow 100-99 victory.
Can Memphis play with the same kind of heart tonight as it prepares for a postseason run without Mike Conley and Marc Gasol? According to head coach David Joerger, yes.
“It’s for history, baby,” Joerger said. “We’re going to give it our best shot.”
Memphis ‘best shot’, however, has not been enough to derail Golden State in the last six meetings between the two teams. The Warriors took all six games and they covered the spread in five of them, winning by an average of 19.5 points per contest in spite of last week’s one-point margin.
