What seemed like inevitability, even before the 2016-2017 NBA season tipped off, has, indeed, proven as so. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors will meet in a third straight NBA Finals and this year’s version will serve as a rubber match series between the two franchises. Who did the odds maker’s like to prevail in the much anticipated battle? Opening NBA Finals Odds 2017 are favoring the Warriors at -260 ($260 wins $100) while the defending champion Cavaliers are drawing a +220 line ($100 wins $220) to retain their title.
Talk about easy, the Cavs and Warriors have made these playoffs look as much with both teams absolutely dominating their conference adversaries.
Cleveland opened its postseason run with a hard fought series against the Pacers, but it, nonetheless, sweep Indiana and its 12 playoff wins came by an average of 15 points per game.
Golden State has been even more dominant, going 12-0 to reach its third straight NBA Finals while winning those 12 contests by an average of 16.3 points. Only the Spurs, when fully healthy for the Game 1 clash with Steph Curry and company, were able to stay within single digits of the Warriors, falling in said matchup 111-113.
Both teams are, no doubt, expecting some better competition in the Finals as they should. Last year’s series featured some lopsided scores, but Cleveland needed seven games to prevail and it edged Golden State 93-89 in the finale.
The Warriors own a slight 10-7 advantage over the Cavaliers dating back to the 2015 NBA Finals and they split this year’s regular season series with each team holding serve at home.
The NBA Finals are scheduled to open on Thursday, June 1 at the ORACLE Arena in Oakland, California. Game 7, should the series need one, is set for Sunday, June 18. The Finals will be played in a 2-2-1-1-1 format with the Warriors owning home court advantage for the series.
Golden State went 36-5 at home this regular season while Cleveland suffered 21 of its 31 regular season losses on the road.
Prior to the start of the NBA Playoffs, the Warriors were a -150 favorite to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
