No ‘i’s’ have been dotted nor any ‘t’s’ crossed, but a boxing match between UFC Lightweight champion Conor McGregor and undefeated, multiple belt holder Floyd Mayweather is drawing closer to a reality. So close, in fact, that odds have been floating about for a few months, the latest of which have Mayweather lined as a heavy -750 favorite ($750 wins $100). McGregor, meanwhile, is drawing a +500 line according to Bovada’s latest Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather fight odds.
McGregor, a 28-year old native of Ireland, has long pursued a bout with Mayweather, a quest that initially seems futile; however, it now appears the Dubliner is on the verge of realizing what many labeled a far fetched dream.
As recently as yesterday, UFC president Dana White, who has worked with McGregor’s camp in an effort to bring the fight to fruition, said he will sit down with Mayweather’s people to discuss details of a potential meeting, including a revenue split.
Given that a meeting between the two would be a sanctioned boxing match and not a mixed martial arts fight, Mayweather, who owns a 49-0 record and has held as many as eight world titles, stands to earn the lion’s share of the revenue. But McGregor is a worldwide star in his own right, and his case for a near even split is not a ridiculous one.
The two fighters, with the help of White, will hopefully come to terms soon on something that is feasible for both parties. Fight fans are crossing their fingers even though the majority of folks, including the odds makers, like Mayweather in rather lopsided fashion.
Mayweather last fought in September of 2015, beating fellow American Andre Berto via unanimous decision to retain the WBA, WBC and The Ring titles. The 40 year old Michigan native owns 26 wins by knockout, but he has not recorded a KO victory since 2011.
McGregor sports a 21-3 MMA record, including a 9-1 mark in the UFC. The Irishman last stepped in the cage in November, defeating Eddie Alvarez by TKO to retain his Lightweight belt. He has never been in a professional boxing match.
September 16, 2017 has been mentioned as a possibly date for a fight between McGregor and Mayweather.
