With just under a month to think about it, odds makers and bettors still like the Tide to roll in tonight’s 2015 Sugar Bowl meeting with No. 4 Ohio State. The latest Ohio State vs Alabama spread from Bovada.lv has Nick Saban’s squad lined as a -9 NCAAF Point Spreads favorite while the Over/Under is coming in at 58 points. Tonight’s game is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 p.m. ET at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans; coverage of the game will be provided by ESPN.
No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes vs No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (-9, Over/Under 58): To many the 2014 Crimson Tide did not quite look like the kind juggernaut Nick Saban has fielded in recent years, but the team’s results would indicate it is on the verge of becoming one. Sure, Alabama has experienced its share of close calls, but it managed to put together a 12-1 record against one of the most difficult schedules in the country.
And the Crimson Tide’s offense has clearly benefited from the addition of Lane Kiffin. While Kiffin is a much maligned and unsympathetic figure, he has transformed the Alabama offense into one of the nation’s best.
The Crimson Tide are averaging 37.1 points and 490.5 yards per game under Kiffin’s direction and senior quarterback Blake Sims has excelled on his watch. Sims has completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 3250 yards and 26 touchdowns (seven interceptions) and he has carried the ball 73 times for 321 yards and six scores.
As for the Crimson Tide defense, it has been, per usual, one of the top units in the nation, allowing just 312.4 yards and 16.6 points per game.
The Buckeyes are certainly capable of giving Alabama trouble, though. While the opening Ohio State vs Alabama spread suggests they are in for a long evening, Urban Meyer’s squad should be brimming with confidence.
Ohio State has won 11 straight games and it is coming off, arguably, the most impressive showing by any team all season. The Buckeyes destroyed a good Wisconsin team 59-0 in the Big Ten Championship Game, a feat which propelled them into the College Football Playoff and one that may have provided the impetus for them to go even further.
College Football Betting Trend: Ohio State is 4-0 both straight up and against the spread in its last four games playing as an underdog and coming off a game in which it scored 40 or more points.
