The offensive line will be a nice catalyst for the running game with their pure brawn. The tech line can simply smash defenders off the ball and pave huge holes for Ore to run behind. The Hokies also field a nice fleet of veteran receivers with the best being Eddie Royal, 5-10 181. They also are set at Tight End with a couple of promising young pass-catchers in Sam Wheeler, 6-3 253, and Greg Boone, 6-3 280.
The Virginia Tech Hokies defense is flat out nasty. The players are big, aggressive, physical and instinctive across the board. The Hokies will blitz any player at any given time out of the 4-3 formation. It all starts up front with Va Tech's trio of bulls in defensive tackles, Carlton Powell, 6-2 295, Barry Booker, 6-4 280, and Kory Robertson, 6-2 340. Off the edge DE Chris Ellis, 6-5 260, has some eye popping speed and is disruptive. The Tech linebackers will be among the best in the nation. ILB Vince Hall, 6-0 240, is always around the ball as evidence of his 128 tackles last season. Both Hall and Xavier Adibi, 6-2 226, are crushing hitters that can intimidate. At cornerback Va Tech has little to worry about with a shutdown corner in all-american Brandon Flowers, 5-10 190. The rest of the secondary is long on talent and opposing defenses should find it difficult to get anything done through the air this season. The special teams have some question marks at the punter and kicking position. Despite the uncertainty in the kicking game the Hokies are well schooled and have a big play return threat in Eddie Royal. The Virginia Tech Hokies look very tough. On defense their is no weakness. The play of Sean Glennon will ultimately be the deciding factor to whether or not this team wins a national championship but heading into the season this looks like the team to beat.Brad Marchetti Opening Day Virginia Tech Hokies Power Ratings: 20-80 Scale 20- Poor 30- Well Below Average 40- Below Average 50- Average 60- Above Average 70- Very Good 80- Great Coaching: 80 Quarterback : 50 Backs : 75 Receivers : 65 Offensive Line : 70 Defensive Line : 75 Linebackers : 80 Secondary : 75 Special Teams : 60 SportsBetting.com has posted college football betting odds to win the 2008 BCS: Alabama 100 - 1 Arizona 300 - 1 Arizona St 50 - 1 Arkansas 60 - 1 Auburn 100 - 1 BYU 300 - 1 Boise St 100 - 1 Boston College 200 - 1 California 40 - 1 Clemson 100 - 1 Colorado 200 - 1 Florida 8 - 1 Florida St 30 - 1 Georgia 35 - 1 Georgia Tech 75 - 1 Hawaii 300 - 1 Iowa 100 - 1 Kansas St 300 - 1 LSU 6 - 1 Louisville 20 - 1 Maryland 300 - 1 Miami FL 30 - 1 Michigan 8 - 1 Missouri 25 - 1 Nebraska 40 - 1 North Carolina St 300 - 1 Notre Dame 60 - 1 Ohio St 30 - 1 Oklahoma 12 - 1 Oklahoma St 50 - 1 Oregon 50 - 1 Oregon St 300 - 1 Penn St 40 - 1 Pittsburgh 300 - 1 Purdue 300 - 1 Rutgers 75 - 1 South Carolina 75 - 1 South Florida 100 - 1 TCU 100 - 1 Tennessee 45 - 1 Texas 10 - 1 Texas A&M 60 - 1 Texas Tech 300 - 1 UCLA 35 - 1 USC 5 - 2 Virginia Tech 30 - 1 Wake Forest 300 - 1 West Virginia 8 - 1 Wisconsin 30 - 1 Field (Any Other Team) 100 - 1 |

After an off-season of turmoil stemming from the tragic on campus shootings the Virginia Tech Hokies football team can at least provide some solace to the students and fans. Frank Beamer enters his 21st year at his alma mater as he looks to improve on last year's 10-3 season with hopes of winning a national championship.
