The bulk of the Week 1 action takes place today with more games than even the die hard college football fan can consume, but with the NFL still a week away, NCAA games will linger all the way into Sunday and Monday. Tomorrow will see in-state rivals Kentucky and Louisville tangle at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium and SMU battle its former Southwestern Conference rival Baylor. Things turn technical on Monday, which features a showdown between ACC Coastal Division foes Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia. College Football Point Spreads are going with home team in each of those games as Louisville, Baylor, and Virginia Tech are listed as -14, -9, and -7 against the spread favorites respectively.
Kentucky Wildcats vs No. 25 Louisville Cardinals (-9): Bit of a mystery line here with four of the last five in this rivalry series being decided by seven or fewer points. The Cardinals, who won last year’s meeting 24-17, are viewed as a rising team under the guidance of Charlie Strong while the Wildcats are viewed as the SEC’s weak sister; however, the talent gap between these two programs is not that far apart. Kentucky proved this by winning four in a row from 2007 to 2010 and two of those victories were outright upsets with the Wildcats lined at +5 in 2007 and +3 in 2008. Yes, Joker Phillips squad struggled mightily on offense last season, averaging a mere 15.8 points per game, but the return of its top two quarterbacks, both of whom saw significant playing time last season, as well as its top receiver and top rusher from a season ago should lead to some improvement on that side of the ball. And, while the Wildcats were no offensive power in non-conference play last year, they did fare much better against non-SEC defenses, averaging 24 points per game outside of league play. The Cardinals should win this game, they are the better team, but the latest College Football Predictions should be calling for a Kentucky cover.
