Week 8 college football odds are out and it looks to follow the crazy trend the football season has taken since week 1. Every year the football campaign takes on its own face unlike any other and to this point the 2007 season is about parody. No one team has dominated the season the way Ohio State did during the 2006 regular season and no team can throw its hat onto the field and expect to win versus a perceived weaker opponent. Perhaps in week 1 Michigan thought just that when the Maize and Blue watched little Appalachian State of Boone, NC roll into the big house and stamp a signature on a season that will always be known as the year of the upset.
We begin our look at week 8 college football odds with Thursday’s two game line up headed by BIG EAST rivals, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosting the University of South Florida Bulls in the prime-time ESPN game. With the trip to Piscataway N.J., the Bulls get a chance to show off their shiny new ranking, No.2 in the BCS, compliments of LSU and Cal, both week 7 losers. This game could have the Bulls heading into dangerous territory as they enter the game installed the favorite by a -2 1/2 point chalk at Sportsbetting.com. There is nothing the Scarlet Knights would enjoy more than to knock the Bulls down a notch or two. And Rutgers has the talent to ambush USF in Rutgers Stadium. It was only last year when the Scarlet Knights were in the running for a BCS Championship as USF is in 2007.
Thursday’s other game has Utah travelling to Fort Worth, Texas for a crucial Mountain West Conference battle at Amon Carter Stadium. The Frogs, tabbed in pre-season as a possible BCS buster hasn’t performed up to expectations; however, are respected enough by oddsmakers at Bodog sportsbook to have the team installed a -3 1/2 point home favorite. It’s my advice that you better think twice before playing the favorite here. Utah started the season poorly but has stepped up its game winning its last 4 of 5 games SU and have covered ATS the last two.
My favorite betting game for early Saturday is South Carolina giving -13 ½ points (BetOnline.com) to the visiting Vanderbilt Commodores. Vandy covered at home but lost SU to Georgia in week 7 but was defeated handily in their only SEC road game losing at Auburn 35-7 and failing to cover +7 points ATS. The Gamecocks have fared well ATS covering in 4-of-6 games. I think South Carolina giving the points has good value if the spread stays under 14 points.
Mississippi State heads to Morgantown, W.V. for a game with West Virginia installed by Sportsbook.com a +23 1/2 point road underdog. If the Bulldogs weren't intimidated winning SU and covering +12 1/2 at Auburn in week 3 don't expect Sylvester Croom and his Dogs to have a problem covering 23 1/2 to the Mountaineers. I can't wait to see the money line for this game.
Who would have thought we would be talking about Kansas in mid-October. While much of the Big 12 focus has been on the marquis teams Oklahoma, Texas and the emerging Missouri Tigers, the Jayhawks have quietly gone 6-0 both SU and ATS. In those six games KU has averaged 50.3 points a game. Colorado will try to be an ungracious host as a +4 point home underdog, according to oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com sportsbook. This could be one of the better games of the day.
Arkansas might have the best two running backs in football but they can't throw the ball or stop any team that does. BetUS.com has thrown an insult at the Rebels sticking Arkansas with a -5 point road favorite tag. If Ole Miss gets the ball needing a touchdown to win in the last minute they will win. The Hogs have collapsed in all three SEC games played in the waning seconds. If the defense oriented Rebels can contain the run they have a great chance to pull out a SU win as a +5 home dog.
Wake Forest is only giving -3 to Navy at Annapolis as installed by Sportsbetting.com. I think the Demon Deacons will cover this line. While the Midshipmen play hard, their one diminsional offense will not be enough going against the strong Wake defense. I like Wake to pull this out -3.
Tennessee and Alabama traditionally get together for their annual pic-nic the third Saturday in October and this year the cooking will be at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Bodog (Bodoglife.com) has the Tide as a -1 point favorite versus the Vols. Personally, I will take a pass on this one but it should be a great game.
The SEC West battle of the Tiger takes place in Baton Rouge with the Bengal Tigers of LSU favored by -11 1/2 according to Sportsbook.com. Unless you were living in a cave last Saturday, you know LSU went down as the No. 1 team in the land as ranked by all polls. Auburn will have problem generating enough offense to score on the LSU defense. While the Auburn War Eagle plays good defense their offense is lacking. I don't expect to see Auburn with the same lightening in the bottle they displayed in their win at Florida in week 5.
