Argentina Coach Resigns after loss to Chile

Argentina was shocked in the Soccer Betting World Cup qualifying 1-0 by Chile on Wednesday and coach Alfio Basile decided he had seen enough and resigned the next day. The resignation was a surprise to some including the president of the AFA, Julio Grondona. The AFA tried to convince Basile to stay but it was not to be. Possible replacements for Basile include Argentina’s youth coach Sergio Batista, River Plate's Diego Simeone and Miguel Angel Russo of San Lorenzo. Argentina has some time to find a coach since the team doesn’t play again until November 19th in a friendly against Scotland. The next game in World Cup qualifying for Argentina is in March when they play Venezuela. Argentina has a talented squad that includes Lionel Messi, Juan Roman Riquelme and Sergio Aguero but they have not played well recently. The loss to Chile was the first loss ever to Chile in official competition. With the loss Argentina dropped into a tie with Chile for third place in South America. It is not a disaster though since the top four automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Since 2006, Argentina has not been that good under Basile. They have 14 wins, eight ties and six losses. They finished second to Brazil in last year’s Copa America tournament.

Brazil is also struggling and receiving criticism. They played a scoreless draw against Columbia and have gone three straight matches at home without a win. Fans are calling for head coach Dunga’s resignation. "It's normal to hear that when Brazil doesn't win, I'm not the first nor the last coach to endure this," Dunga said. "People are trying to install a crisis here, but I think it's too much. We are still in second place, but it looks like we are in last." Brazil is in second in South America and the top four teams advance to the World Cup. With Kaka and Robinho it was expected that Brazil wold be playing better. "I would boo the team too after we played the way we played," Robinho said. The only good part for Brazil has been a defense that hasn’t allowed a goal in five matches. But in Brazil it is expected that goals will be scored and victories will be easy. This year Brazil has five wins, three draws and two losses. Brazil was playing without suspended striker Adriano. While the pressure is on Dunga still believes things will be fine. "We are on our way to qualify to the World Cup," Dunga said. "I am patient and I will handle this (pressure)." Brazil’s next World Cup qualifier is in March against Equador.
