Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney breaks foot!

by Thomas Jensen on Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney breaks foot!England's hope to win Euro 2008 has suffered a huge blow as Manchester United 21 year old striker Wayne Rooney broke his left foot. Despite the loss of Rooney, the bookmakers at Bodog.com have Manchester United a -170 odds favorite against Portsmouth FC on Wednesday's match.

"Wayne Rooney has suffered a hairline fracture of his left foot," said a statement released by the English champions on their official website.

Rooney collided with Reading's Michael Duberry at the end of the first half and was replaced by Nani. The game ended in a draw. The Manchester United star almost missed last year's World Cup with a broken metatarsal in his right foot and his involvement in Euro 2004 was ended after a metatarsal injury to his left foot.

England faces Israel and Russia at the beginning of September in crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers. It is unknown at this time how long the injury will keep Rooney on the sidelines but he is sure to miss the next two Premier League matches with Portsmouth and Manchester City as well as England's August 22nd international friendly with the German squad.

With Rooney out you can expect Sir Alex Ferguson to start Carlos Tevez against Portmouth at Fratton Park. Portsmouth is still a heavy +450 odds underdog even with Rooney out of the game.

Bodog.com have posted European Football betting odds on Portsmouth FC vs Manchester United for Wednesday at 2:45 PM EST:

Portsmouth FC: +450
Manchester United: -170
Draw: +250
